Bronze Officer

The Officer range is a new watch case shape designed for the new collector of our brand. It is based on the Military range but does away with the crown guard to reduce the overall width to 45mm and is slimmed down to 12mm for a more sophisticated watch that is smaller and slimmer so that it is more suitable for the office and not just as a weekend watch. The entire case is designed around the use of a lathe and wire cutter for production, so the cases are not moulded and are cut from a solid block of material. The lugs are articulated to give some visual interest to an otherwise simple case design and curved downwards for a more natural fit on the wrist making it more comfortable to wear especially for smaller wrists.

Launching the Officer range is the Bronze Officer for Singapore’s 50th Anniversary (aka SG50). Singapore as our adopted country gained independence in 1965 and we wanted to create our first commemorative watch to contribute a sort of telling of a story for this country. Not satisfied with just using one of our watch models and slapping on a new dial and printing 50th anniversary somewhere like most other watch brands, we decided to design a watch that actually had meaning.

The Bronze Officer was never part of our original plans. When we first looked at doing our first commemorative watch for Singapore’s 50th anniversary, we wanted to do something in conjunction with the Singapore Formula 1 Night Race. It was going to be a full carbon fiber/ ceramic chronograph based on our Oceaner series. However, after discussions with collectors, and understanding what the occasion meant to most Singaporeans we changed our approach. The watch had to carry more meaning as it marked a significant milestone in the country’s short journey. We decided on using bronze to show the richness of history and to highlight the importance of trade as Singapore was and still is a major trading port in the world. Until now, bronze watches have always been dive themed and we wanted to show that there is more versatility and applications for the material. So it was decided that we were to do a bronze watch that was slimmer and more dressy.

The main case is finished to a high polish whereas the bezel is deep brushed with a polished rim. The multi-finishing and combination of curved and angular shapes give the watch a 3-dimensional finish that creates more visual interest as the bronze ages. The pinkish hue of the bronze starts out as almost a pink gold feeling but ages slowly into a much muted almost brandy colour. A deep etched and circular brushed steel caseback is used together with a sapphire display caseback to give a view of the movement.

We decided to use our GMT movement as the majority of Singapore’s population are migrants and the idea of having a multicultural nation with roots from other countries and keeping track of home time was a great application for this. The watch utilises a vintage GMT movement based off an ETA2836 caliber and made by seagull watch co. We had the movement sandblasted and plated gold colour to match the bronze case. A skeletonised bronze rotor similar to our Bronze Diver is used to complete the watch.

The watch comes supplied with two straps, an aged brown leather strap with white stitching and bronze plated steel buckle and a croc printed brown leather strap with a sewn in bronze plated steel buckle giving the watch more versatility.

A black date window with white numerals is used to match the deep chocolate brown colour dial, our moVas trademark of a 0 instead of 1 is printed in red to mark the start of the month. Applied indexes in a polished bronze colour is used together with a similar hand treatment to give the continually patinating case a visual ‘pop’ so that it does not look old and worn as it ages. C3 Superluminova lume is used on the centre of the applied indexes and hands for great legibility in the dark. We did not want something that screamed out, “look at me! I have an anniversary watch!,” so we discreetly printed “Singapore 1965” on the bottom of the dial. Those who know will just have a small reminder of this historical event, whereas for others it will just come to be known as the second bronze watch in our collection. Only 50pc of this unique watch has been made.
